The End Game

As I sat with the young couple for a pre-marriage counselling session, I shared with them the secret to a stress free wedding! “The secret is…” I began, “… to simply keep the glory of God as your ultimate objective.”

“There’ll be so many decisions to make. Decisions you don’t feel qualified to make, like; the colour of the flowers, the cut of the suit, the car for the bride. What will put them all into perspective is to ensure the end game is the glory of God.”

It’s true of a wedding and it’s true for all of life.

Watchman Nee sums it up this way,

What is God’s purpose in creation, and what is His purpose in redemption? It may be summed up in two phrases, one from each of … two sections of Romans: “the glory of God (Rom. 3:23) and “the glory of the children of God” Rom. 8:21.1

“…for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (Rom 3:23 NIV)

“I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.. [the] glory of the children of God.” (Rom 8:18, 21 NIV).”

He goes on,

God’s purpose for man was glory… Man’s thought is always of the punishment that will come to him if he sins. But God’s thought is always of the glory man will miss if he sins. The result of sin is that we forfeit God’s glory; the result of redemption is that we are qualified again for glory. God’s purpose in redemption is glory, glory, glory.2

“I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one — I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.” (John 17:22-23)
